Giresun / Cherry

Giresun Cherry

The homeland of cherry is Giresun. It is voiced by some historians that the name of the city derives from the greek word for cherry “Kerasus” or “Keresea” due to this fact.

In his expedition to East Black Sea, Roman commander Lucullus saw the wild cherry trees unknown in the west in 74 B.C. and brought back with him cherry saplings upon his journey back to Rome. Thus, cherry spread throughout the world from here.

The center for cherry production of Japan, the city of Sagae has announced Giresun to be a sister city as Giresun is the homeland of cherry.

The cherry fruit has lately quite lost its significance in Giresun and was replaced by hazelnut.
